Five Awesome Things About Today
  1. The greyhound has figured out that the back yard is ALL HERS. She will now act like a complete spaz and do wind sprints and laps. And then come inside and totally crash out on her bed. This makes me happy like you would not believe.

  2. Fresh strawberries on Cheerios. I have finally figured out how much strawberry I need to cut up in order to have some fruit with every bite. Yay!

  3. We found some boxes of thank you notes! I don't have to go out and buy any. Though, I'm out of stamps and my address labels still say the rental. Oh, well.

  4. Books on CD are fabulous things for my commute. I am entertained instead of annoyed at the radio. Also, since most of the commute is with my cruise control set for 58 mph, I'm getting *fabulous* gas mileage.

  5. It's Friday! Tomorrow is supposed to be lovely and mild. We're going to the Farmers' Market, TJs, getting more odds and ends from the rental, and free lunch at the Evil Empire's picnic. Then home to collapse/get things unpacked, hung up, put away, and organized.

What's good in your life today?
sabine: (Handbasket)
My weekend wore me out. There's something about driving 800 miles in 2.5 days that'll take it out of you. It didn't help that for most of it I was on highway 20 across Iowa - Road of Very Few Bathrooms.

  • Remember that scene in "Big" where Tom Hanks is jumping on the giant piano in the toy store? Peanut's been doing that to my ribs. She decided that this was a super-fun activity about halfway between Madison and Mapleton (7 hr drive). Brat.

  • Apparently, I glow. I'm not sure what exactly my family is seeing, since I think I look puffy, oily, and awkward, but they disagree. Downwood would like to point out that he STRONGLY disagrees with my self-image right now and that, to him, I am Utter Hotness. I think he's delusional.

  • It was wonderful to see my family again, even if it was for just a little while. I hadn't seen most of my dad's family since my wedding. I see my mom's family more often since they're a whole lot closer, but it was still good to spend time with them and relax a little.

  • Almost all of my reactions to stress and plans changing at the last minute are either genetic or strongly learned. Watching my mom, two of her sisters, and my grandmother all react the same way that I do was...educational. Also, we all have the same reaction to getting hungry: we get cranky. It's a little terrifying how alike we all are.

  • Did I mention that US Highway 20 is somewhat hellish when you're 7 months pregnant? There are no bathrooms. Woe. Angst.

  • 8 weeks and 5 days from today. I'm still hoping for August 1st.

  • Last night was quite possibly the best reaction to a critical botch in a game that I've ever seen. One of our intrepid band went off looking to score some of the highly dangerous drug that he got addicted to in the last session (don't blow a Toughness check in Dark Heresy - bad things happen). The dice failed him and he carried off the scene beautifully. If I had brain recording, that'd go on the highlight reel.

  • Packing continues apace. You wouldn't really know that I'd cleaned out my sewing room last week as it has now been filled up with all the baby stuff my family unloaded on me over the weekend. One aunt has an 11-month old and another's youngest child is 3. Since I like hand-me-downs, they're cleaning out their basements/spare closets. We close on the house on the 25th, will be having a painting party over the weekend of the fourth, and will probably be shifting "home base" down there the weekend of 11/12, since our home internet will be going away on the 10th. If you like hauling boxes, moving furniture, or painting walls, we will take whatever help we can get.

  • Work goes okay. Still not totally in love with my job, but not terrified/stressed out/hating it right now. I'll take what I can get.

I am about halfway through Pendragon. It's an RPG system designed to let you play a Knight of the Round Table. It looks like fun, though I don't know if I'd rather run or play. Either way, I think I'd need to finish reading the game mechanics and then do some background reading on Arthur.

I'm also about halfway through Zoe's Tale, the most recent novel in the Old Man's War universe by John Scalzi. I've been reading his blog for a while and heard good things about his writing. I'm not usually a fan of sci-fi genre, but these books totally pulled me in. I have devoured them and am sad that soon I will be out of story.

Though yesterday dawned cold and dreary, I was happy. This meant that the farmers' market wasn't terribly crowded, even though we showed up later than I would have liked. We got some of the best asparagus ever, a ton of rhubarb, a huge bag of salad, and some other veggies and cheese. I love eating breakfast there - I usually get an almond scone, some cheese, and a pastry. It's all delicious and makes me happy. The mostly empty pan of rhubarb-apple cobbler and the nearly full pan of rhubarb coffee cake also make me happy. I love cooking!

My sewing room/study is now completely packed. I have put away all my sewing implements and the couple of in-progress projects. I finished up one final project that took care of a decent amount of upholstery fabric, as well as the old t-shirts, fabric scraps, and old pillows that we had stashed around the upstairs. There are now two big, slightly lumpy, and not very pretty pillows waiting to be transported to the new house. Seeing my room emptied out makes me a little sad, but also accomplished. Also, I don't need to buy more fabric for a long, long time. Seriously. I was finding fabric that I'd completely forgotten about and can't remember why I bought it.

Downwood also got me back into Puzzle Pirates. Since all of my skills are beyond rusty, I started a new character. I can now be found as either Jessilyn or Sabinei on Cobalt. It's a fun way to kill time and since my back is in a constant state of hurt, it limits the number of hours I can lose.

Yay!

Downwood is in the basement playing with powertools. I'm upstairs trying to get past the Chinese-food-induced coma so that I can do some more painting tonight. I have one that I really want to get done by the next weekend, but I'm not sure if it'll happen.

One of my Hogswatch presents showed up today! Downwood got me a weally BIG swored.* It's a very shiny rapier. Needs sharpened, though. Mwahahaha!

Seriously, it's gorgeous. Overall, it's almost four feet long with a silver basket that has knotwork and other shinyness in it. I love it. Sooo preeety...

*ahem*

We met with Msgr Ken this evening to discuss wedding planning. Our names are in The Book. November 18, 2006, 3 pm. And they have no problem with my uncle performing the ceremony. And we have a Checklist of Things To Get Done. This is all wonderfully reassuring for me and my control freak tendencies.

We started dividing up the remaining planning, but quit when it sounded like work. Anything with graphic design is his, anything with food or plants is mine, and we'll share the rest.

The other important After Work Today Occurrence was the final emptying of my old apartment. Yes, I never have to return to the slightly scary neighborhood ever again! I'll be returning my keys with my January rent and give them my new address for whatever remains of my security deposit after they deduct for whatever bullshit charges they concoct. Many thanks go to the Prestons for the hauling away of the Heaviest Couch Ever.

I'm gonna go drink tea and eggnog and paint for a while before bed. Today was a good day. *grin*

* - And if you don't get the reference, you need to go read Hogfather by Terry Pratchett. Now. Git.

It is done

The townhouse is filled with stuff.  The truck is empty.  Food has been acquired.  I'm thinking it is time for a nap.  :-)

[livejournal.com profile] exlibris11235 was impressed with the box labeled "Balrog", though confused as to its minute size.  [livejournal.com profile] suibhne_geilt expressed admiration for the box labeled "Minas Tirith Gate" and the level of geekosity that it implies.  Me, I'm just glad that everything's unloaded.  Now, to the unpacking...

Loading the truck went much better than earlier anticipated.  As in five hours faster than prior estimates based on amount of stuff, size of truck, and paucity of crew.  The [livejournal.com profile] clockwerkdragon was an amazing and wonderful help in this operation.

Unloading will commence tomorrow at 11 in the morning.  If you wish to swing by and lend a hand hauling boxes or furniture, it would be most appreciated.  If you feel like bathing a cat, we can accommodate you just as soon as we find the bin with the shampoo.  If you feel like being all managerial, waving your hand, and watching us do your bidding, come back later: we charge for that.  Address and directions can be obtained by IM or email.

Present status
The cats? Really confused.
Downwood? Really tired.
Me? Look like I was playing rugby.  As the ball.

It's not good for the mental stability of an extremely hungry, mildly stressed-out, very worried, and generally cranky Sabine to spend her "I can't face packing another box right now" break by reading the news and checking out political blogs.

And by "not good" I mean "kicking the last couple of supports out from any sense of optimism or hope".

Not good at all.
