Alex's PCP thinks that his collapse yesterday was related to either an allergy or anxiety trigger for an asthma attack. Still, since he's missed some developmental milestones (talking), they're sending him to a pediatric neurology referral, just to make sure there's nothing going on.
He spent a lot of the afternoon cuddling me on the couch. Now, he's playing with a tape measure. Later, we'll go to soccer.
He's still our happy boy. He's still a four-year-old.
Both kids have allergy appointments on Friday. We'll see how that goes.

Date: 2015-10-08 04:31 am (UTC)But, well, when my kid was four, I would've liked better advice than we got at the time, so... *waves hands awkwardly* Anyway. My daughter is on the autism spectrum (she's 15 now). Sometimes she goes non-verbal (especially when stressed or feeling under pressure to provide an answer); usually she can still type when that happens, and I know now that there are a fair number of people on the spectrum who just... hate talking. If the neurology thing comes back with a suggestion of autism spectrum (or you already have one and I didn't notice it in my cursory "try to make sure I'm not saying things you already know"), and you want to ask any questions... Well, like I said, I really would've liked to've had better advice than we got, and to've spared my kid some of the stupid (and sometimes hurtful) attempts her school made, to deal with her spectrum issues (especially pre-diagnosis). I still hear about some of those, 8-9 years later, because she has a kind of amazing memory. O:/ She's also now a bit of an activist on the topic.
Anyway, sorry again to've bugged you, especially if I totally missed something! Good luck -- and you have great taste in books! O:>

Date: 2015-10-08 11:25 am (UTC)Alex isn't on the autism spectrum. Probably. Right now, we think he has speech apraxia and some anxiety issues - if you ask him to do something more than twice, he'll freeze up and start sobbing. Luckily, I understand anxiety. He also has MANY food allergies and EOE, making things even more difficult for him.
The neurology appointment is mostly so that we can rule out a seizure disorder on top of everything else. He collapsed in the hallway at school last week and no one knows why. The doctors want to be sure that there's nothing else going on that he can't tell us about.
Overall, he's a sweet, caring, intelligent kid. Last night, he grabbed my hand and pulled me to the living room. He needed snuggles from Momma, so we cuddled and watched some TV before dinner.
I was worried about the spectrum issues for a long time, but he's been checked out by several experts who all agree that he's got something else that's messing with his developmental milestones. We don't know exactly what it is yet, but he's getting speech therapy at school and is finally starting to attempt sounds.
Thank you for your comment! It's nice to know I'm not alone with worrying about kiddos. :) And loving good books. :D
