Nebraska did their part by beating Colorado 30-3 yesterday. If ISU can beat Kansas (game starts at 11:30), we'll have won the Big 12 North!! Yay!!!

And then we get to play Texas for the conference championship. And by "play" I mean, show up to the stadium and get completely mown down.

EDIT: #@ %^#*&% @$^!! @#!@&%@#$!!!!!!!

Grrrr...Way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, boys. I'm sure our WHOLE STATE is proud of you. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrraaaarrrrrgggghhh.

Yarrr!

It be Halloween, matey. Though the scurvy dogs of my employers forbade me to carry my sword and daggers, my new bodice is like a charm against attack. Savvy?

[livejournal.com profile] downwood, we really need to get a picture of it tonight. I need this thing documented, because...damn.

That is all. *evil grin* Mwahahaha!

Happy Birthday, [livejournal.com profile] downwood!
sabine: (Mostly apples)
This has been an absolutely splendid weekend.

Yesterday morning I managed 2.75 miles before my lungs and legs demanded to rest for a little while. I think I'll try to shoot for 4 miles by my birthday. I think it's within reach. Probably. Hopefully.

My Badgers pulled out a win yesterday under extremely unlikely conditions. I was expecting them to lose, but were somehow ahead when time ran out. My favorite quote from the announcers was that, "Glen Mason is apoplectic." Yes. Yes, he was. Heh.

In gaming last night, I discovered that I can only roll well when it's not actually necessary. I had an absolutely beautiful shopping list, but then dropped several rail guns on my toes instead of installing them on the outside of the ship. Oops. It was very much fun and the plot's about to get...interesting.

Today, I slept in and it was wonderful. After a good long while sleeping, I got up and made some coffee. We ran some shopping errands, and I only deviated from my list a little tiny bit. Just a hair, really. My new purple and orange Halloween lights look awfully spiffy on the front porch. *grin* I wanted to carve my pumpkin this afternoon, but I think it's still a bit early - I don't want it all shriveled before The Night of Candy.

Speaking of, does anyone know which night Verona has chosen for Beggars' Night? I'm going to assume that it's the 31st, but I haven't heard anything for sure. It's the first time in many years that I've been in a neighborhood with kids and in a place where they'll come to the door to ask for it.

Instead of gutting a pumpkin, I made a new bodice. It's really pretty. Reeeeaalllly pretty. The people at work are going to be even more confused. How much more confused? Well, they know that I know weird things like why avian flu is bad, how flu vaccines are produced, and what the word "deneb" signifies. In two weeks, they'll also find out that I'm a pirate! Yarr!!

For dinner tonight, I tried something new: I grilled ribs. I discovered that there's a fine line between caramelizing the sugars in the sauce and carbonizing a thick layer on the whole surface. They still tasted pretty good, if a bit crunchier than I'd expected.

The final load of laundry for the weekend is in the washer. I think I'm finally caught up. I suppose there are more chores that I could do, but I'm going to go curl up with a good book and just enjoy being lazy for a while.

The Unholy Football Trifecta is complete!! *happy dance!!!!!!!*

I want Wisconsin and ISU to win and Awa to lose. That's all it takes to make me happy on a Saturday!

From this post over in [livejournal.com profile] baaaaabyanimals, I decided to make a new icon.  I can't decide on the caption.  I was leaning toward something along the lines of "What?!" or "Fuck off." or "Bite me" but none of those really capture the true meaning of Angry Kitty.

Here's the icon in question

Opinions?

Edit: [livejournal.com profile] silmaril's entry has amused me to no end.

The news usually depresses me: people doing bad things to other people, nature doing her evil goddess schtick, and general nastiness making me wish I'd taken CNN.com out of my Daily Sites to Check. There were two stories in the news today that gave me different emotions - anything different is good!

Story the First - This one made me insanely jealous. Why didn't I know about this in high school?! Instead of exploding bacteria to collect their DNA and proteins, I could be exploding bigger stuff like, oh say, buildings and mountains and metal oxides to make pretty colors in the sky!

Story the Second - Yes, the Atkins diet will help you lose weight, but do you really want to be dipping your kidneys in nail polish remover? I've hated the fad from the get-go, so this satisfies my deep love for justice or some such ethereal entity that might allow me to be smug about their current financial strain.

Note to self: It is not necessarily the best idea to go to faire when heat advisories are instructing everyone to stay inside. However, should you choose to ignore these polite suggestions and venture forth into the day, it is appropriate to scandalize all and sundry with the open-side pants, sparkly-jingly belt, and chainmail halter top.

Today was the annual biotech product fair in the Union. There's a free lunch of extremely good food and vendors showing off the new shinies that their company is trying to sell. I came away with a bunch of pens, some lens cleaner [1], a handful of candy, a bunch of flyer thingies, and the promise of one of the company reps to personally hand my resume to one of the lead scientists in R&D! [2]

I was sitting back, getting ready to crack open some cold caffeine, when the phone rang. Super Scientist #1 walked over to my office and said, "Phone for you. I thought it was you on the phone, but you're here, so...phone for you." [3]

"Hello?"
"Hi, Sabine, this is ScienceRep. You won the raffle for the stereo, can you come over and pick it up in the next 20 minutes or so?"
"Um, sure, I'll be right over."[4]

So now I have a new stereo.[5] I just cleaned my apartment and reorganized everything, so I'm not entirely sure where I'm going to put this thing, but it's very spiffy. Yay! *happy dance*

This article made me laugh a lot. Apparently, the bookies are confident that Dumbledore is going to buy it in HBP, so they had a contest: write an account of the death of the great wizard Albus Dumbledore in the style of another author. It's very amusing.

The standard purity test that's been going around. I'm not surprised by the outcome )

[1] - I'm a microscope junkie. I chatted with the nice folks and drooled over the new models. I've been worrying that the lens cleaner I've been using isn't good enough, so this was very exciting.
[2] - Munira is awesome. She gives us free product, buys us lunch, and is willing to help me get a job. Squee!
[3] - Super Scientist #1 doesn't keep in touch with reality very often.[6]
[4] - I work on the complete opposite end of campus from the union - just about as far as you can get and still be on campus. I can't walk there in 20 min, but I got lucky with the bus timing, yay.
[5] - I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the drawing for the iPod Shuffle.
[6] - I've been reading lots of Pratchett lately. Is it obvious?

yarr!

I got to spend most of today wandering the Ren Faire over in Bristol. I finally found my piratey hat, which pulled the whole outfit together nicely. I really need to find a better way to attach the rapier to belt, but I've got another week before we're taking my parents.

Am exhausted. Will have pic of garb tomorrow.

I got all the embroidery done for one of the cuffs. I'm quite proud of it. I've also noticed that the pattern has the potential to hypnotize anyone who views it for too long. We can only hope that [livejournal.com profile] downwood will use this power for good.

I didn't say that it was terribly to likely to happen, mind you. But now you know, and knowing is half the battle. Just don't watch his wrists too closely. *grin*

My bodice is all grommeted and laced and such. I tried it on this evening and I'm less than enthusiastic about it. I don't think it looks very good at all. I've been told that that's probably how the style is supposed to work, the straps will help the lines, it'll be different with the chemise and skirt (as opposed to a t-shirt and scrubs), and it looks fine already.

Truthfully, I'm filled with paranoia. I have this irrational fear that if I wear this thing in public or at faire, I'm going to get laughed at. It might not be to my face, but I can't make the feeling go away.

Bah. At least I've got fifty bazillion other projects to keep me entertained. I really wanted this one to work though... *pout*
sabine: (Hmmm...)
Friday I managed to sneak out of lab without encountering Boss or smashing the computer to infinitesimal bits with a sledgehammer. The notable lack of sledgehammers around lab contributed greatly to the latter part.

There's something wrong when you're driving toward a city at 4 pm on a Friday of a holiday weekend and traffic is a breeze, just so long as you're driving into town. The interstate coming out of Chicago was a veritable parking lot for many, many miles while the inbound trip was a breeze.

After I arrived at the hacienda, [livejournal.com profile] downwood and I braved the wild frontier of suburbia to meet up with [livejournal.com profile] bexdragon at her family's abode. Thence, we ventured forth to Ribfest. One word encapsulates the entire experience that is finding parking, riding real school busses, lines, the smoking people, the scary people, and the amazing yumminess that is barbeque. This word is, "Mmmmmmmmmmmm".

Well, maybe that's not so much a word as an onomatopoetic expression. You get the point.

After stuffing ourselves silly with spicy, yummy, falling-off-the-bone, pork goodness, we waddled into Colonial to top off any remaining room in our digestive tracts with ice cream. I think that Bex and I made her father and brother wonder about our sanity, but that's the price that has to be paid in order to do our part to increase the entropy of the universe.

Yesterday was spent bonding with my sewing machine. I got most of the way done with a bodice for myself and I hemmed my sister's skirt. I convinced [livejournal.com profile] downwood to watch Lilo and Stitch with me, and during the movie I attempted to sew some trim onto sis's bodice. Erm, no, I can't delicatly slipstitch ribbon to suede. It's just not going to happen.

We also managed to brave the wild plains of Wal-mart and kill no other patrons, though there were many deserving. I rewarded myself for learning how to sew by the purchase of a very shiny pair of scissors. Yes, it's so exciting, isn't it? *silly-ironic*

Today, [livejournal.com profile] downwood was nice enough to leave me at home for many hours while he went and gamed with the guys. I got all sorts of wonderful introvert mental refreshing. I feel much better now than when I woke up this morning. I think I might even have a bit of reserve built up, though next week's social events will be the litmus test of that. Yes, I'm part of an extremely social introvert group: somehow we make it work.

I managed to accomplish much over the course of the day. I feel like enumerating them for posterity's sake.
Today I:
  • Did many loads of laundry. It started as just washing towels, then sheets, then whites, then...yeah, lots of laundry.
  • Washed both cats.
  • Sheared one cat prior to bathing her.
  • Finished my bodice.
  • Fixed the buttons on one of his shirts.
  • Nearly completed the goldwork on one of the cuffs.
  • Rested my brain.
  • Hit the grocery store for fruit, hummus, and pitas.
  • Managed to not eat the entire package of Peanut Butter-Filled Fudge Shop cookies. These are tools of Satan herself - addiction in cookie form.

Tomorrow, I get as much embroidery done as I can, and get a good way done in the actual construction of the shirt for which the cuffs and collar are intended. This is a manageable goal. I like this. *grin*
sabine: (Crazy)
Tonight, our illustrious leader is planning to regale us with his "clear strategy" for Iraq. I'm guessing that the term "clear strategy" actually has nothing to do with either of those words.

I'm currently debating whether or not I should view this attempt at glib and convincing rhetoric. On the one hand, I've been getting my political immune system into gear by reading a biography of Cicero that is subtitled "The life and times of Rome's greatest politician". Right, like I believe that for three seconds. On the other hand, I have a lot of fabric that I'd like to get cut out, and I don't trust myself with scissors if there's been any booze in my general direction.

Therefore, I have a poll. Enjoy.

[Poll #522261]

My costume rocked. That's all I really can say about it. You can't go too wrong with black fishnet, vinyl, and satin. I love this day.

In one hour and 48 minutes, The Month In Which No Good May Come will be over. Thank the heavens. I'm looking forward to November like you wouldn't believe. Tomorrow is my best friend from high school's birthday. This would be more important if I knew anything about where she is now. I miss her...I wish I knew more.

I feel like I need a break to recover from the weekend. Oy. At least my Cyclones pulled out a win! Yay, two conference wins in a row!! We're only two away from a bowl invite! *happy dance* Of course, our next games are Nebraska, K State, and Missouri. Eesh. I'm not holding my breath.

Tomorrow begins the mad scramble for the last couple pieces of data. I "get" to present lab meeting (hm, need to figure out treats) and get feedback on what I've been doing since my prelim.

I'm gonna need lots of coffee.
sabine: (silmaril coffee)
Like the subject line says, I actually have words to say that contain honest-to-Darwin information. Hm, I hope I didn't give anyone a heart attack there. *grin*

I am supposedly writing a presentation for lab meeting on Monday. Yeah, sure. I need to take all of the pretty pictures I've been collecting for the last couple of weeks and throw them into PowerPoint with some description of how I generated them. After my lab rips them to shreds on Monday, I'll pour the remaining bits into a standard layout. Voila! My poster will be done.

Yes, I'm starting to get nervous about the presentation at the regional ASM meeting. It's not a formal talk - I'll just be standing by my poster waiting for people to ask me questions to which I really should know the answers. This doesn't reassure me.

As [livejournal.com profile] downwood posted in his journal today, last night went off perfectly. For once, the plan went without hitting any serious snags. Well, there was one snag, but I knew about it on Monday. The people at the craftshop didn't get the kiln fixed in time for the kings and queens to be glaze fired. I saw them get loaded two weeks ago, but no firing. Grr.

Yes, I threw a chess set. No, I didn't throw the knights - don't be an idiot. I threw cylinders, then carved the little horses. It was a lot of work, but it was oddly fun. I could probably be convinced to make another set, but it would take some major incentive. We're talking cash. Lots.

This morning's commute was both entertaining and boring. Walking out to my car I had Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn all pointed out to me. It was a beautiful morning. Then I hit traffic. Ugh. Once I was finally able to drive over the speed limit again, the fog hit. I estimated that I had somewhere around 40-50 meters of visibility. It eventually lifted a bit, but I don't think it ever got above half a mile the whole drive.

My darling cousin, [livejournal.com profile] walker710, called me while I was bored on the interstate. I wonder if he even reads this anymore, seeing as how he hasn't updated in just under a month. Dude, if you see this, let me know.

After I parked my car and was walking to the bus stop in the mist, I got assaulted. A crow decided that the tower gave it clearance for a high-speed flyby or aerial assault. I'm not sure if it would've missed me had I not ducked to the point of nearly hitting the ground. At least it wasn't a pigeon this time. Stupid @#%#$^ pigeons...

On the literary front I've finished both #2 and #3 in the Series of Unfortunate Events. I'm addicted. I also finished a collection of short stories titled, Bet You Can't Read Just One. Kinda cheesy, but really funny stories. I liked it. I just started on The DaVinci Code. It seems good, but I reserve judgment until later.

See? Wasn't that informative? I don't think it was on the order of TMI, but I could be wrong.

Happy Wednesday!
sabine: (please)
Since I just got confirmation that the object of my affections and devious planning has left the vicinity of a computer, I feel safe posting.

*grin* Sneaky, no?

The flowers are arranged in a water pitcher, due to the lack of obvious vase-ness in the kitchen and spare room. That's okay: I think they look rather nice how they are.

The birthday presents are wrapped and positioned on the table in an aesthetically pleasing manner. The extra parts of the present are stashed out of sight in my bag.

The kitchen has been cleaned and dinner begun. The smell of garlic, onion, basil, and tomato in the kitchen is second only to the cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg of pumpkin pie (that's going to be in just a couple more weeks. yay!). I decided to go with a slightly less complicated sauce for dinner. This way it can simmer longer and nothing bad will happen to it. Mmm...I love cooking.

I think this is one of my better birthday ambushes. Though, it'd be perfect if he hadn't known that I was going to be here doing something. That's okay. I can understand how he'd be extremely concerned if he didn't know where I was - I could be lying dead in a ditch somewhere. These are the problems with my always-connected-to-the-internet lifestyle. *grin* Not that I really care.

I must go back to the stove. I think the pan's ready for frying some italian sausage. Have a pleasant evening, everyone!
sabine: (sure)
Though I'm a secretive person, I have a hard time keeping secrets. No, this is not the total contradiction that it seems. You see, tomorrow is [livejournal.com profile] downwood's birthday. I've had his present sitting in my apartment in kinda plain sight (the best place to hide something) for about 10 days now. The suspense is killing me. I so want to just blurt it out. Must...remain...sneaky...

*grin*

I got to watch a lot of football and play a lot of games this weekend. Yay! Two of my favorite activities made Sunday wonderful. Saturday was mildly stressful, though entertaining. I got to meet the parents. And now I know whence his sense of humor comes. It's always a good sign when I can instantly like my BF's family and know that I could very probably come to love them as much as him. *blush*

I get to see my sister every other weekend until New Year's! Yay! *happy dance* This weekend is footballing and going out. Then there's my birthday and hockey. Then there's our grandparents' 50th party. Then she graduates. Then it's Christmas. There's gonna be an awful lot of miles put on vehicles. I'm so excited! And, hey, this time I might not even have to say, "Fuck off! It's sister time."

Hm. My list of things to do today keeps getting longer. Too many errands, not enough caffeine. Maybe I should eat soon. Yes, food will help.
