I've been sitting in the command center today for more than an hour and have yet to do anything productive. We weren't really anticipating a bunch of issues, but if it stays this dead all day, I may lobby to go home early. It's really not worth it for the customer to be paying $175/hour for me to sit here and read LJ and Facebook.
Friday and Saturday were pretty awful. I didn't get nearly enough sleep between those two days and worked too much. I went to bed early Saturday night and got woken up 2 hours later by the fire alarm in the hotel going off. Thankfully, it wasn't a real fire. Accounts vary, but the general idea was that someone was cooking something in their mini-kitchen and filled up the floor below mine with smoke.
Yesterday was the very best day that I've had in a very long time. I got to sleep in, then grabbed some hotel breakfast. I read Bloodhound and drank several glasses of OJ while ignoring rambunctious children in the lobby. Downwood showed up just as the rain let up a little. I went back up to my room to grab a jacket and my purse and we headed out into the city.
We drove downtown, got a little turned around, and parked at Soldier Field. We walked over to the Field Museum in blustery wind, but not too many rain drops.
The Field Museum was SO COOL! We saw all sorts of birds, mummies, jade, rocks, Real!Pirate Treasure, super cool pictures, and DINOSAURS! BIG DINOSAURS, SMALL DINOSAURS, AND WEIRD DINOSAURS!!! Up until yesterday afternoon, Downwood hadn't known about my love of dinosaurs. I reverted to 10-year-old Sabine and had a total ball!
After 5 hours, my feet and ankles were about to fall off. We didn't get to see the hall of plants, the gems, most of the hall of animals, or a couple other exhibits. I want to go back sometime soon to see those things...and to see the dinosaurs again! We trudged our way back to the car and got caught in traffic heading back to the hotel.
We needed to put our feet up for a while before dinner, and Downwood unwisely let me have the remote. This resulted in short-attention-span TV watching for an hour or so. We went to Portillo's for dinner - both of us have been in withdrawl for this particular form of junk food since Downwood moved to Madison. Cake shakes FTW!
After dinner we flipped through my new dinosaur book, vegged out a little more, and had an early night since I needed to meet my implementers in the lobby at 6:45 to head to the command center.
Also, my cold seems to be improving! My ears don't hurt anymore, I'm still stuffed up and still coughing, but I don't feel like crawling into a steam room and dying anymore. This is SO much better than Friday night. I know that I need to keep getting rest the next couple days to totally shake this thing.
But, yes, yesterday was made of win and awesome! This is all thanks to my husband driving down to give me the best day that I've had in a long, long time. He is wonderful and amazing!
