neeeeeeed music!

1 - Suggest a musical group. I like almost everything. I draw the line at extremely twangy country, screaming metal that I can't make out the words, or "ambient sound". The last one is included because of an ex who would play the soundtrack to Myst when he really wanted to "get down". Ugh.
Of course, if you can supply me with a sampling of the tunes that you recommend, I'm much more likely to become addictedand attempt to gnaw on your arm by way of thanks. I'm caring like that. That was a bit too weird, even for me. Move along, nothing to see here.
2 - I want to get an mp3 player but am made nervous by the tales of the death of iPods at 1 year of service. If you can confirm or deny this rumor, I'd appreciate it. If you have something other than iPod for the portable perusal of punk (wow, such a nerd), what is it, why did you choose it, and what's the price range I'm looking at?
