Feeling sort of like a real adult
One of the highlights of the summer here in Mad-town is the weekly Farmers' Market. It's huge and wonderful and delicious! I don't bother eating breakfast before going, since there are scones, cheese, and fruit easily and cheaply available.
I convinced Downwood to go up there this last weekend. It's a MUCH longer drive from the new house, but I still think it's worth it. We stocked up on cheap produce and cheese. Downwood got some contacts for bulk honey, since the new basement doesn't have the same mold/mildew/ick problem as the rental and he wants to start doing his brewing again.
Saturday also included hauling most of the rest of my closet out of the rental and stopping at the Evil Empire's company picnic for lunch. When we got home and everything was unloaded, I started prepping the various veggies (rhubarb, zucchini, sugar snap peas, green beans) for the freezer. I also took about a dozen bananas out of the freezer, converted them to banana bread, and put them back in. Then, thinking ahead a little, I made a batch of cookie dough, portioned it out, and put that in the freezer, too.
I'm looking forward to seeing the 4-H kids selling sweet corn out of the back of pickup trucks in a couple weeks. Hopefully, I'll be able to get my mom to come up and help me freeze several quarts of fresh sweet corn. I know the theory, but I've never done it by myself.
This is one of those things that makes me feel like a Real Adult (c). My parents always had large gardens that get converted to a freezer full of food for the rest of the year. I haven't done nearly enough, but I feel better for having some veggies stacked in the freezer.
Also, I'm very much looking forward to having rhubarb coffee cake in December. Yum!
